Winfield Hunter: It’s Never too Late

By Joyce Oscar

Passion for football started late for Winfield  Hunter, a Wide Receiver and Safety from Faribault, MN. But it’s never too late.  The lessons you learn in football like teamwork, overcoming obstacles and dedication, are lessons that will help you all throughout life.

After the recommendation from football legend Darrell Thompson, former NFL running back for the Green Bay Packers, Winfield joined the team his sophomore winfield-hunter-quoteyear in high school. “…I couldn’t have loved it more,” says Winfield. I was a starter on the JV team and averaged approximately 3 touchdowns per game.”

At 15-years-old with a good vertical and great hands, a wide receiver was born. As a junior on the varsity team, in a non-starting position, he had 353 receiving yards, 18 receptions and 4 touchdowns. Winfield had big plans for his senior season which included dropping his 40 time and increasing his receptions. With the help of a personal receiver coach, his workout sessions to improve his time was accomplished. However, the glory of the accomplishment was short lived. Winfield suffered an injury causing him to miss over half of his senior season. “I suffered a severe high ankle sprain my senior year and it made me not an explosive athlete when I returned,” he stated.

After he finished at Faribault, in order to have more collegiate opportunities,  he enrolled in a post-graduate program at Suffield Academy in Suffield, CT. According to Winfield it was the perfect route for him. “This opportunity gives me a chance to prove my abilities to any coach who shows an interest in what I can offer their schools, and to also further my academic skills for my college career.”
