No Off-Season for Josh Fisher

By Joyce Oscar

From Star Wars movies to visiting Disney World each year and playing in the snow, Josh Fisher admits that despite being 6’2” and 215 lbs, he’s just a big kid at heart.  “I enjoy just about everything Star Wars,” he says. “I have all the movies and even have quite a collection of Star Wars Legos.”

When you watch him on the field one would never guess that the land of Mickey is one of his favorite places. But one thing you can tell, is that he loves the game of football and is happy to be playing. We caught up with Josh to talk about his season and what is next for him.

PLAYBOOK:   Josh what were some of the highs from this past season and your most memorable moment?

JF:   One of the highs was having a 2 game winning streak.  As odd as that might sound, my school finished with 1 win my freshman season and 2 my sophomore season.  The last time our school had a 2 game winning streak was 10 years ago, so program wise it was a high moment.  One of my most memorable moment was the final defensive play to seal the second of those 2 wins.  We were ahead by 7 late in the fourth quarter.  The other team was driving and with 40 seconds left and the ball at our 35 they faced a 4th and 11.  The QB dropped back, started to move to his right, reversed field and ran trying to get a first.  From my LB position I dropped into coverage, read the run reacted.  QB got 9 yards, our offense took a knee…game over.  http://www.hudl.com/v/13VzGJ

PLAYBOOK:  Tell us about some of your accomplishments this past season.

JF:  I was nominated for and have been selected to participate in the National Underclass Combine (NUC) in Atlanta the week after Christmas.  Also, I have been invited and will be participating in the Army All American combine the following week in San Antonio.  From a performance perspective, I was one of 2 players on my team to make all conference first team defense and the only non-senior linebacker.

PLAYBOOK:  The combine is a huge event, what are your expectations and what are you most looking forward to?

JF:  My expectations are to go down to San Antonio and show any scouts there that they have overlooked a linebacker from the northern Virginia area.  I am looking forward to competing with and against some of the top talent in the country that will allow me to show my ability and to gauge my skills against them

PLAYBOOK:  Clearly you’re in great shape. Do you have specialized training outside of the workouts at school?

JF:  I trained last year with Coach Russel Robey from “College Bound Athletics” @CBATrainers .  I worked out with coach 6 days/week, 2 hours/day for 2 months (May and June)  I hope to do the same before this season.  Coach Robey pushed me harder than I had been pushed previously and the results showed.  I went from @200 lbs when I started with him to @215 and 8% loss in body fat.  My bench increased by 35% to @250, squats went up 15@ to 390.  All of that happened over a 2 month period.

PLAYBOOK:  What is your take on nutrition and exercise for athletes?

JF:  My nutrition advice is from my trainer’s wife who is a nutritionist (@CBATrainersDiet).  Basically it is: keep sugar/salt/carb intake low, avoid soda, drink lots of water and keep the protein intake up.  I try to follow it as close as possible but sometimes I stray, especially around the holidays.

PLAYBOOK:  What would you say is a good healthy breakfast to start with before a morning workout?

JF:  Again, from this came from @CBATrainersDiet.  When I am working out in the morning my breakfast typically consisted of a lot of protein.  I had 4-5 eggs, yogurt and a 6 oz hamburger patty.  Given the results I can’t argue with the process.

PLAYBOOK:  What are you most looking forward to next year?

JF:  I’m just looking forward to getting back on the field again with my teammates.  Hopefully we can continue to improve on our record like we have each of my three years on varsity.  Also I want to show scouts what I am capable of doing and that I can contribute to their program at the next level.

Along with Josh, we can’t wait until next season to see what he and his teammates have in store for us.
