He’s intense…He places full board the second the game clock starts…He prepares all week by watching film, practicing and getting ready mentally…He works hard during a game-he owns himself…He is always giving 110% and never gives up on a play…He plays until the whistle blows. These are some of the things football mom Molly Gorman loves about her son Patrick Gorman and his football grind.
Patrick is a WR/SS at Douglas S. Freeman High School and has played some type of football (flag or tackle) since he was 7-years-old. With all the camps, gear, training and travel, as well as supporting his high school team combined, Molly estimates that she and her husband have invested well over $8,000.00. If you ask her if it’s worth it…the answer is ABSOLUTELY. “He is working extremely hard to make it to the next level,” she says. “He really wants to play college football and we would love nothing more than to get to watch him on the football field for four to five more years!” So whatever it takes to help Patrick support his dreams, the Gormans are all-in.
Patrick plays Ice Hockey and Lacrosse in addition to football. And where most moms are terrified when it comes to contact sports, Molly is the total opposite. “I am a huge sports fan! I love watching all my boys play their sports. I was born to be a mom of boys!”
He is a tough kid and has been fortunate enough so far to have escaped serious injury while playing and for that, Molly is grateful. He has field awareness above and beyond his years, which she says helps keep him safe. She admits she still worries a little while he’s on the field, particularly this season when Patrick started returning punts. “I got nervous,” she says. “That one-on-one in an open field had me a nervous wreck.”
Although she may get a bit nervous at times, she doesn’t let it prevent her from enjoying the games. Surrounded by other parents, grandparents and screaming fans, Molly sometimes leaves the game exhausted feeling as if she were out there playing the game as well.
