Marco “daMonster” Brewer on Football & Family

By Joyce Oscar

When you’re 6’4″ and 290 pounds, you can just about call yourself anything you want and get away with it. His twitter handle is “marcodamonster” and a MONSTER on the field he is. He’s only a Junior and still has a little growing to do. Maco Brewer is an Offensive Tackle at Corvallis High School in Corvallis, Oregon.  You would initially think an athlete this size wouldn’t have speed, but Marco is just the opposite. He runs a 5.5 in the 40 and is a driving force on the offensive line.

Marco & Athletics

Marco also plays basketball and up until the eighth grade he believed that would be the sport he would play in college. However, his love of the gridiron took over. Playing football since the 3rd grade, he was initially placed as Running Back and Tight End. But when he got to high school coaches took one look at his size and changed his position. “I’ve always had a lineman body type, but I’ve always been more athletic than everyone. When high school coaches saw my size they automatically put me at O-line.” It seems the line is like home to him. marco-brewer-quoteHe says he’s never been shy of contact and remembers as a youth player liking the feel of hitting people.

Marco & Family

Marco has always had the support of his family, no matter what sport he was playing. It’s good to know there is always someone in the stands cheering you on. “My family is my everything, they drive me to be the best person I can be,” he says. “They make it clear that I don’t have to play if I don’t want to, but if I commit to something then I commit.”

His mom, Nova Sweet, is his number one fan and Marco can often hear her yelling in the stands. “I hear my mom yell a lot! It’s positive and I love it.” She says she also goes through a range of emotions being that number one fan. “Marco is exciting to watch, which makes me smile and cheer loudly,” she admits. “He has character and integrity, which makes me excited to see what his future has in store.”  Marco also has a fan in his younger sister whom he calls his “little me”. He knows she’s marco-brewer-7watching his every move so he makes sure he continues to be a good influence for her.

Marco & College

Where many athletes play high school ball in order to play in college, Marco plays the game just to play. He loves it and although there are no concrete scholarship offers yet, schools are hot on his trail. “I don’t know honestly, I think with the way schools talk to me and the way I work they should come,” he says. “But I’m really just enjoying the process.”

To make sure he stays on top of his game and the recruiting process, Marco trains hard and tries to attend as many camps as possible. Outside of his regular practice, he trains with OSU alumni Alex Linnenkohl every other weekend in the off season. “He’s the best linemamarco-brewer-6n coach in the northwest,” he says. Marco isn’t concerned with whether or not a school is D1, or D2. The division doesn’t matter to him. His goal is to possibly gain a free education while doing something that he loves and in the process prevent a financial strain on his family.

Marco has visited The University of Washington, Washington State University, Oregon State  and recently The University of California where he made a great connection with Offensive Line Coach Brandon Jones while there.

“He’s a hardworking young man, who is humble and talented, which makes me very proud,” Marco’s mom says. “I love this kiddo with everything in me, and wherever he ends up is going to be better off  having Marco join their family.”
