Built for Speed
“What’s the 40 time?” is a common question when discussing college and NFL prospects. It can arguably be one of the most important decisions when coaches choose players. So much so, that 2019 Coleman Reich, of Ledford High School in High Point, NC, was asked to run it over and over again at an Appalachian State camp earlier this year. Coleman already has NFL speed, and he’s only a sophomore in high school. At 6’0″ and 181 pounds this multi-position athlete, posted 4.45 40-yard dash time. That’s right up there with a few NFL greats including Safety Adrian Wilson who is also from High Point. “People would be surprised to know how fast I run. When I attend college camps they usually make me run the 40 multiple times to make sure their times are correct.”
The times are definitely accurate and although it seems to come easily for Coleman, with each great play comes hard work and diligence that he has invested behind the scenes. Aside from his daily practices at school, he works with professional trainer Josh Prevette, at ACT Fitness in Greensboro, NC. Prevette has trained several college and pro athletes including several members of the Carolina Panthers.
The hard work in this athlete hasn’t gone unrecognized . In addition to football, Coleman has excelled in track and field. He was recently honored as being the fastest Freshman in the State of North Carolina in the 100m, by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association as well as receiving All County and All Conference Awards in the 200m.
Coleman models himself after Stanford Running Back Christian McCaffrey. “I like Christian McCaffrey because he has been underrated but is motivated to be the best, he has great quickness…” says Coleman.
He won’t yield to being less than the very best he can be. This year Coleman’s coaches are utilizing in multiple positions. He’s playing Strong Safety, Cornerback, and Free Safety on defense and Wide Receiver on offense. He has also being utilized on both Punt Return and Kick Return teams.
Can he handle all of this? Well his stats tell the whole story and prove that he can. His career totals on offense are 15 receptions, 340 receiving yards, 3 TDs and 119 KR/PR yards. On Defense he’s posted 119 tackles of which 90 were solo, 7 interceptions and 4 caused fumbles.
With all of his talents and position experience, Coleman is by far an outstanding asset to his team. College coaches are projecting him to be ideal in the Nickelback position in college. However, he is still open to the Wide Receiver position.
As with most high school athletes, Coleman has aspirations of playing football beyond the college level. But right now, he’s focused on going to school to get a great education so that he’ll have something that is guaranteed.
