At 6’0″ and 150 pounds, Azikwe Mays is only 14-years-old and is already close to a perfect height for his quarterback position. Azikwe seems to be quite advanced in his position for his age group, so we were excited to have the chance to ask this extraordinary athlete a few questions.
PB: How long have you been playing football?
Azikwe: I’ve been playing football since I was 8-years-old
PB: Have you always played the same position?
Azikwe: I’ve never played other positions in an actual game, but I am just a good at some other positions.
PB: So do you hope to still play QB at the next level?
Azikwe: I’ll play wherever the put me…but QB would be nice.
PB: You seem to be pretty advanced in your position. What would you say has been the most challenging and how did you overcome that challenge?
Azikwe: I was able to throw accurate spirals at 9-years-old, but it was challenging because the kids couldn’t catch them. Shout out to the Kosciusko Cardinals and Jackson Titans…I’m just teasing, the Cardinals and the Titans made me who I am today.
PB: So how did you overcome that passing challenge?
Azikwe: I overcame it by taking a few friends and working with them in the off-season at the house, and sometimes on the road.
PB: Who do you model yourself after?
Azikwe: I really don’t have one player I model after. I watch film of certain players though. I watch Bret Farve, Adrienne Peterson, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Tom Brady, Deon Sanders, Mike Vick and Tavon Austin.
Like many great athletes, they didn’t just play one sport. Before Azikwe fell in love with football, he played baseball from the age of six to eight.
